Zero Waste Dental Care: Bite Review

Zero Waste Dental Care: Bite Review

After squeezing the last bit of toothpaste out of its plastic tube, I went ahead and ordered myself a box of zero waste goodies from Bite. It’s time to upgrade my dental care routine.

Simple plastic-free packaging

For my first box, I picked a jar of mint toothpaste bits, a jar of floss, and a bamboo toothbrush. The total cost was $40 plus tax, and it’s a 4-month supply. Note that Bite is subscription-based, and I know this may be a bummer for some people. However, don’t let that discourage you from trying their products since you can cancel your subscription anytime on your own on their website under your profile. No call and no fee.

I like how the packaging is minimal and zero waste. There are no plastic tapes on the box, so you can simply unfold the box and recycle it with paper. Details like these show that the company cares.

The instructions on the glass jar say to bite down and then brush. However, I would add “chew” after “bite down”, to help the tablet foam better in your mouth when you brush. At first, it may feel odd to chew it, because it really seems like you’re chewing a mint. Forming a new habit takes time, so it may take you a week or so to get used to this. Once you start brushing, it feels like normal toothpaste.

The tablets are tiny, but they are efficient and convenient. Just make sure to not spill water in the jar and pick them out with a dry hand.

I have tried 5 different brands of bamboo toothbrushes so far, and this is the only one where the bristles are not so basic. One thing to note is that the bristles are made of polyester, a synthetic material. Here is a YouTube video from Bite’s founder that explains why she chooses polyester over boars’ hair for the bristles. In a nutshell, it is a dilemma and there is no perfect choice (yet). Maybe one day we will have a material that is both sustainable and animal-friendly.

After using these 3 products for a month, I’m happy to say that I will continue purchasing the toothpaste bits and toothbrushes. I just wish the floss was a bit thinner.

Going zero waste can not be done overnight, however, just like Bite’s slogan: every little bit counts.
